Indonesia Course/Trip Interest Meeting: October 17th, 5pm, in MC 309

2014 Indonesia Poster-002

The Indonesia course-trip is coming back this spring semester, 2014! This time, we will be going to the national parks and marine reserves of North Sulawesi, in addition to spending time in Yogyakarta, Central Java.

SOAN 312: Indonesia and Southeast Asia in Cultural Context is adding an environmental studies focus, in addition to exploring issues of culture, religion, globalization, and more. To that end, it will include a three-week trip at the end of the semester that is divided between Yogyakarta (often described as the “cultural heart” of Indonesia), where we will explore culture and language through ethnographic engagement in the city and with the help of our hosts at Atma Jaya University, and North Sulawesi, where we will explore Indonesia’s biodiversity and challenges connected to human relationships with the environment. Also new this year, we plan to provide conversational Indonesian language instruction to participants.

As always, the course will require a short application, is limited to 10 students, and has been competitive in the past. Expenses will be subsidized by a generous grant from the Luce Foundation. If you are interested, please attend the interest meeting, where application forms will be distributed, and all your questions will be answered:
